Girls Cross Country Finish 2nd Place at State Meet!

November 7th, 2011

Caroline Ukena and Sara Larson became the first ever SCHS cross country girls to climb the steps of the ceremonial state trophy stand three years (top four teams are recognized on the trophy stand), Lydia Holtmann became Catholic’s first girl to receive all-state honors as a freshman and sophomore, and the Irish scored a second place state finish Saturday at the state championship race in Jeff City. Holtmann (17th), Larson (21st) and Andrea Lampe (23rd) gained all-state honors as top 25 finishers on the challenging Oak Hills Country Club course. The Irish finished second in 2009, they won the state title a season ago and capped an improbable season with their race on Saturday. Catholic had won 7 of the last 8 races heading to state and, as expected, raced Herculaneum for the state title that they had taken from the Black Cats in 2010; Herky was second to the Irish last season while the Irish were second to Herky in 09. Senior Caroline Ukena, freshman Sarah Winton, sophomore Anna Faulkner and sophomore Courtney Ukena were Catholic’s other runners in the state race. Ukena, an all-state runner in 09, has raced at state all four of her XC seasons while Faulkner was a member of the championship team in 10. Courtney Ukena was a 2010 alternate. Although the boys team did not qualify for state, Michael DeVoss, James Glover and Connor Randell qualified for the state championship race. DeVoss was 62nd, Glover 72nd and Randell 74th.
